World’s longest handwritten Bible to be unveiled in Kerala

Thrissur is preparing for a landmark moment in its spiritual and cultural history as the world’s longest handwritten Bible – an astonishing 100 kilometres in length – is set to be unveiled on Sunday. The ceremony, scheduled for 8.30 am, will take place in the courtyard of the Sacred Heart of Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica.
The manuscript, crafted entirely by hand, is the result of a massive collaborative effort led by KCYM Thrissur Archdiocese and the Sacred Heart of Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica Pilgrim Centre. The initiative forms part of the 2025 Jubilee Year celebrations and also commemorates the centenary of the Thrissur Basilica, a major pilgrimage hub in Kerala.
A monumental collective effort
A total of 2,025 contributors participated in copying the Bible word-for-word, creating a manuscript that organisers describe as a remarkable testament to shared faith and dedication. The text has been written using a specialised pen on a fabric-like material selected for its longevity and ease of preservation.
Rev. Fr. Gio Cheradai said the material was intentionally chosen so that “the written cloth can be rolled up, and anyone wishing to read it can do so by turning the roller.” The massive text has been arranged across about 12 reels, all of which will be housed inside the Bible Tower.
Technology meets tradition
The cloth-based manuscript can be scrolled manually, allowing readers to navigate through the handwritten text much like an ancient scroll. Organisers said this design not only supports preservation but also offers a unique reading experience.
Cheradai said Cardinal Mar George Koovakkad, who will serve as the guest of honour at the unveiling, will write the final sentence of the Bible, marking the official completion of the project.
Honouring a century-old legacy
Rev. Fr. Thomas Kakassery, Rector of the Basilica, noted that the idea was envisioned as a spiritual contribution for the Jubilee Year and a tribute to the 100-year-old institution. The project also underscores the role of the church community – particularly its youth – in sustaining religious traditions.
As part of the ceremony, organisers will be presented with the Best of India Record for creating the longest handwritten Bible ever documented.
Large turnout anticipated
Clergy members, youth organisations and devotees are expected to gather in large numbers for the unveiling. The event marks a significant milestone for Thrissur, highlighting both its religious heritage and the commitment of its faithful to preserving centuries-old practices through innovative expressions.
