Kerala weather: Heavy rain alert in 7 districts; swell surge warning for multiple coastal belts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day rainfall forecast for Kerala, placing seven key districts under a yellow alert for Sunday, August 9, 2026.

Heavy rainfall is predicted across Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

A yellow alert denotes isolated heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.

Residents living in hill tracts and flood-prone areas in these districts are advised to exercise heightened caution as persistent spells could trigger localised waterlogging and landslips.
‘Kallakkadal’ phenomenon (Swell surge)

Simultaneously, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has sounded a critical ‘Kallakkadal’ (swell surge) alert along several stretches of the Kerala coastline.

High waves measuring between 1.2 and 1.8 metres are expected to cause sea ingress along the shores of Thiruvananthapuram (from Kappil to Pozhiyoor), Kollam (from Alappat to Edava), Alappuzha (from Chellanam to Azheekal Jetty) and Thrissur (from Aattupuram to Kodungallur) through 5.30 pm on August 10, 2026.

In addition, the Kanyakumari coast faces a similar surge, with swell waves reaching up to 1.8 metres until 2.30 pm on Monday, August 10. Coastal residents and fishing communities have been urged to stay vigilant, secure fishing vessels and avoid approaching unstable shorelines or venturing into hazardous marine zones during this surge window.
