Thiruvananthapuram: In a major relief to students, the University of Kerala has officially agreed to recognise degrees awarded by Sreenarayanaguru Open University (SNGOU), Kollam. These degrees will now be considered valid for higher education and employment within the state.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Deans Council, chaired by Vice Chancellor Dr Mohanan Kunnummal. The meeting was called in response to growing complaints from students who were unable to gain admission to B Ed, M Phil, and PhD programmes under Kerala University.

Since the Academic Council had not convened, the Vice Chancellor used his special authority to approve the decision. Dr Mini Kappan, acting Registrar, was also present during the meeting.

Open University students previously denied admission

A recent report by Mathrubhumi pointed out that several students holding degrees from SNGOU were being denied admission to higher studies due to lack of an equivalence certificate. Despite the university being recognised by the UGC (University Grants Commission), Kerala University had not yet updated its policy to reflect national guidelines.

All universities must recognise degrees from accredited distance education institutions. Kerala State Higher Education Council had already directed that universities in the state should not require an equivalence certificate for such degrees. However, Kerala University had delayed issuing an official order.

This delay led to confusion and frustration among students, many of whom filed complaints and approached both universities seeking clarity.

SNGOU Vice Chancellor Dr V P Jagathy Raj and Syndicate Member Dr M Jayaprakash personally met Kerala University Vice Chancellor to highlight the difficulties students were facing.
