No convicts, no overcharging: Kerala temple body introduces strict rules for pooja item contracts

Thiruvananthapuram: The Travancore Devaswom Board has announced new rules, stating that individuals convicted in criminal cases will no longer be eligible for contracts to sell pooja items. Furthermore, contractors and workers are now required to obtain police clearance certificates to participate in the bidding process.

Those with outstanding dues from previous auctions or those listed on the blacklist will be excluded from the bidding process. Any violation of auction terms will result in offenders being added to the blacklist.

Individuals involved in pending cases related to the Devaswom will be deemed ineligible for participation in tenders. This ensures that only those with a clear record are allowed to take part in the bidding process.

Similarly, pooja items priced below Rs 5 lakh will now be sold through open auctions, replacing the previous e-tendering method.

The Devaswom Board has introduced a penalty for those who fail to pay auctioned amounts by the due date. An interest charge of 18% will be levied on delayed payments.

Action against overcharging and worker safety

To prevent overpricing, the price of coconuts must be displayed at stalls in multiple languages. If coconuts are sold for more than the stipulated price of Rs 10, the excess amount will be deposited into the Devaswom fund, and the contractor's agreement will be terminated.

Contractors are also required to ensure that their staff handling vedi vazhipadu (bursting of crackers as an offering) are personally insured, further ensuring safety and security.

Any changes to the pricing of pooja items must be approved by the Devaswom Board, ensuring consistency and transparency in the pricing process.
