Kerala summer rain from today: Yellow alert in five districts, IMD issues thunderstorm warning

Thiruvananthapuram: Summer rain is set to bring relief from extreme heat in parts of Kerala from 21 February 2026, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert in five districts and warning of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
What happened
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain across central and southern Kerala from 21 February 2026. The change in weather is linked to a low-pressure system over the Indian Ocean that developed from a cyclonic circulation.
A yellow alert has been declared for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts. IMD has also indicated the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall on 21 and 22 February.
Thunderstorms are likely at isolated places on 20 and 23 February, while thunderstorms accompanied by rain and strong winds of 30 to 40 km/h are expected on 21 and 22 February.
Yellow alert in five districts
Central and southern districts are expected to receive summer showers, offering temporary relief from severe daytime heat and high ultraviolet radiation levels. Authorities have cautioned residents about lightning risk, particularly between 2 pm and 10 pm.
Heat continues in north Kerala
Northern districts are likely to continue experiencing high temperatures, as there is no immediate rainfall forecast. The state government has directed that outdoor workers must be given mandatory rest between 12 pm and 3 pm due to rising heat levels. Heatstroke warnings remain in place.
Lightning and safety advisory
The State Disaster Management Authority has advised people to avoid open areas and not take shelter under trees during lightning. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors and limit the use of electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
Health department warning
Despite the rain, high humidity may cause discomfort. The public has been advised to drink sufficient water, use boiled and cooled drinking water, and prevent water stagnation to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne and water-borne diseases such as dengue and leptospirosis. The ultraviolet index remains high between 10 am and 3 pm, and people are advised to use hats, umbrellas and protective clothing.
Relief for agriculture
Recent weeks saw unusually high temperatures in districts including Palakkad, Thrissur and Kannur. The expected rainfall is likely to benefit farmers, particularly in hilly regions such as Idukki and Wayanad, supporting crops like coffee, cardamom, pepper, rubber and paddy.
Fishermen alert
IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts on 21 and 22 February 2026. Winds of 40 to 50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h, and rough sea conditions are expected. Fishing has been prohibited in the specified areas during the alert period.
Why it matters
The summer showers are expected to provide short-term relief from record-breaking heat and water scarcity in parts of Kerala. However, authorities have emphasised caution due to the risks of lightning, strong winds, rough seas and high ultraviolet exposure.
