Athirappilly or Cheemeni? KSEB moves on with preliminary studies for atomic power station

Thiruvananthapuram: Although the government has reiterated that no policy decision has been made regarding the establishment of an atomic power station in Kerala, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is advancing with preliminary steps related to this initiative.

As part of this, the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bengaluru, a central government institution, has begun study to identify a suitable location for the atomic station. This work, initiated following instructions from KSEB, is expected to be completed within six months. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Electricity Minister's office is unaware of this study.

It is said that KSEB has identified Athirappilly and Cheemeni as potential sites for the project. Previously, Athirappilly was considered for a hydroelectric power project, which was later abandoned due to environmental concerns. Similarly, Cheemeni was proposed for a coal power station, but this project too was dropped due to technical issues.

As of now,  KSEB aims to complete the preliminary studies for the project before the government makes a policy decision.
