Kerala announces financial relief for snakebite deaths and wildlife property damage

Thiruvananthapuram: The executive committee of the Disaster Management Authority has approved new guidelines for granting financial assistance from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) in cases related to human-wildlife conflict. The revised criteria aim to provide support to victims and those affected by such conflicts, ensuring a more comprehensive response.

As per the new rules, a maximum of Rs. 4 lakh will be provided to families in cases of death caused by snakebites. This inclusion marks a change in the criteria, recognising snakebite fatalities as part of the human-wildlife conflict issue and offering financial support to those impacted.

Additionally, the revised guidelines stipulate that up to Rs. 1 lakh will be granted in cases where wild animal conflicts result in damage to property. This includes damage to wells, walls, fences, drying ropes, and MSME units while preventing or addressing wildlife threats.

These new provisions are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to address the increasing instances of human-wildlife conflicts.
