Heavy rain alert in Kerala: Yellow alert issued in nine districts today

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is witnessing continued heavy rainfall today, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Yellow Alert across nine districts due to the likelihood of intense rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
The alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, where rainfall is expected to range between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm per hour in isolated locations.
Meteorologists have attributed the weather conditions to a low-pressure system forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, which is influencing rainfall activity across Kerala.
Weather forecast and warning
The IMD has predicted that isolated heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong surface winds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely to continue in parts of the state between May 16 and May 18.
Officials have also warned that thunderstorms may persist in Kerala and Mahe for the next five days, increasing the risk of localised flooding, waterlogging, and disruption in low-lying areas.
Monsoon outlook
According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala around May 26, although there may be a variation of up to four days earlier or later depending on atmospheric conditions.
Weather experts note that the early pre-monsoon activity is already showing strong intensity this year, with repeated yellow alerts being issued across multiple districts.
Advisory
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious, especially in regions prone to landslides, flash floods, and strong winds. Fishermen have also been warned against venturing into rough sea conditions during the alert period.
Officials continue to monitor the evolving weather system closely as Kerala enters a phase of intensified pre-monsoon activity.
