Kerala finds simple fix for expired govt vehicle re-registration

Ottapalam: The Motor Vehicles Department has introduced a new mechanism to renew the registration of government vehicles whose validity has lapsed, addressing a long-standing procedural hurdle.
Offline Process Introduced Due to Technical Constraints
As the renewal process could not be completed through the Parivahan website, authorities have directed applicants to carry out the procedure in person. Instead of an online update, the renewed registration will be issued manually in written form, bearing an official seal as proof.
Move Linked to Election Requirements
The decision comes at a time when a large number of vehicles are needed for election-related duties. Officials noted that many such vehicles had already exceeded their permitted operational period, making it necessary to find an immediate solution.
The revised arrangement applies to vehicles owned by government departments, local self-government bodies, public sector organisations, and educational institutions.
Where and How to Renew Registrations
Vehicle owners can complete the renewal process by visiting Regional Transport Offices located at district headquarters or Sub Regional Transport Offices functioning at the taluk level. These offices have been authorised to process applications and issue the necessary documentation.
Validity rules and existing challenges
Under existing central regulations, government vehicles are allowed to operate for a period of 15 years. Once this duration ends, their registration is automatically cancelled, rendering them unfit for use. Consequently, several vehicles had remained idle due to the expiry of their registration.
One-time relaxation extends vehicle lifespan
To resolve the issue, authorities have granted a one-time concession allowing the renewal of registration for such vehicles. This extension increases the permissible operational period from 15 years to 20 years.
However, officials encountered technical difficulties while attempting to implement this provision on the Parivahan platform maintained by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
