Kerala MVD makes 60 services Aadhaar-based from today; intermediaries to be kept out

Thiruvananthapuram: Sixty more services of the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) will become Aadhaar-based from Monday. The facility will be available only to applicants whose driving licence and vehicle registration records are linked to Aadhaar. The move is aimed at completely eliminating intermediaries from the process.

The security measure will involve a one-time password (OTP) sent to the mobile number linked to the applicant’s Aadhaar while submitting an application. When a vehicle is sold, both the buyer and seller will have to complete the application using Aadhaar OTPs. There will be no need to visit the office. Aadhaar OTP will similarly be made mandatory for each of the services. Officials said office procedures have also been simplified.

Those who have not linked their Aadhaar will have the option to do so, after which they can submit applications. Applications will be processed in a priority-based order. Officials said intermediaries will not be able to get applications processed faster based on their influence, and their applications will not be identifiable as such.

At present, only 21 services are Aadhaar-based. A separate portal will be introduced to schedule appointments for applications that require applicants to appear at offices, including hearings. Through this, applicants can choose a convenient time.

Online services disrupted

Online services were disrupted on Sunday due to an update to the Vahan software. This affected services including the issuance of special permits for tourist vehicles entering the state.

Officials said the issues would be resolved by Monday morning.
