Kerala heavy rain warning: Red alerts issued, Ponmudi closed, dam gates opened amid flood risk

Kochi: Kerala is on high alert as intense monsoon rains lash the state, triggering red alerts in northern districts, opening of dam shutters, closure of tourist hotspots like Ponmudi, and strict restrictions in vulnerable regions. Authorities have warned of possible flash floods, landslides, and rising river levels over the next several days.
Widespread heavy rainfall is expected to continue across Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a series of red, orange, and yellow alerts through June 12. Northern districts face the highest risk, while other regions remain under varying levels of caution.
In a significant development, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod have been placed under red alert on June 9, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

Tourist spot shut, dam gates opened amid rising water levels
With landslide risks increasing in hilly terrain, authorities have banned tourist entry to Ponmudi, a popular hill destination in Thiruvananthapuram district.
In response to rising water inflow, shutters of the Aruvikkara Dam have been lifted, and residents living downstream and along riverbanks have been urged to remain on high alert.
Officials have also cautioned against venturing into rivers, lakes, and other water bodies due to strong currents and rapidly rising water levels.
As a precautionary measure, night travel has been restricted in high-range areas including Idukki, where soil instability and landslide threats remain high. Coastal regions are also under watch due to the possibility of sea erosion and rough sea conditions, affecting fishing activities.
Meteorologists have warned that isolated regions may experience very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides.
The Central Water Commission has issued a yellow alert for the Karamana River (Vellaykkadavu station) in Thiruvananthapuram due to rising water levels. Residents near the riverbanks have been advised to evacuate vulnerable zones if necessary.
Government issues safety advisory
Authorities have urged residents in risk-prone areas to take immediate precautions:
- Relocate from landslide-prone and flood-prone zones if advised
- Avoid unnecessary travel, especially in hilly and low-lying regions
- Stay away from rivers, waterfalls, and open water bodies
- Secure loose structures, trees, and electrical installations
- Be prepared for emergency evacuation and relief camps
- Maintain emergency kits and follow official disaster management updates
Control rooms are operating 24/7 across districts, with emergency helplines 1077 and 1070 activated for public assistance.
