Kerala MCom graduate quits corporate job; Reels in success with fish trade

Kottayam: Prajith Kumar (28), an MCom graduate  from Karukachal has traded his corporate job for a roadside fish business. Despite working as an accountant in various private firms for five years, Prajith struggled with a low salary of less than Rs. 15,000 per month and a lack of better job opportunities. Seeking financial independence, he took a bold step by starting his own business.

Prajith’s fish business runs daily from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm, where he sells around 70-80 kg of fish. After covering all expenses, he earns over Rs. 1,500 a day. Prajith, who started with an investment of just Rs. 12,000, has already recouped his initial costs within a week. Initially starting with 50 kg of fish, he now enjoys steady growth. Along with his friend Gokul, who assists with cleaning the fish, Prajith has also expanded his services to include home delivery.

Overcoming criticism

When Prajith first ventured into the fish business, many friends and relatives questioned his decision, asking why he went for studies in the first place. However, he chose not to answer those questions and instead focused on showing that he was thriving in his new career.

Prajith believes that many educated youth face the challenge of not receiving salaries that match their qualifications and skills. He points out that while some workers without formal education earn over Rs. 40,000 a month, educated youth continue to work for meager pay. Prajith’s aim is to grow his business, open a physical shop in the future, and provide employment opportunities for others.

The son of Prabhu Kumar, a daily wage laborer, and the late Ajitha, Prajith has defied conventional expectations to find success on his own terms.
