Kochi: If you want to witness a high-stakes political battle, Kaloor South is the place to be. The ward is gearing up for a heated contest between two prominent figures poised to play key roles in Kochi’s governance.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) has once again nominated MG Aristotle, who was a strong opposition voice in the council during the previous Left-led administration. This marks his third attempt to win public support.

If the UDF comes to power, he is expected to be a leading candidate for the position of Deputy Mayor.

His main rival, KV Manoj, is contesting for the fourth time. A member of the CPM District Committee and CITU State Committee, Manoj is also a leader of several workers’ unions.

If the LDF retains its hold, Manoj is the front-runner for the Deputy Mayor post. Both candidates are natives of Kaloor South.

Meanwhile, NDA is yet to announce its candidate, leaving room for speculation until the last moment. Kaloor South, where the UDF and LDF go head-to-head, is considered a politically sensitive ward. Religious and community dynamics, along with the broader political climate, could influence voter behaviour. Both Congress and CPM see this ward as crucial for their local strategies.

The contest is expected to be tightly fought, with every vote critical. Both fronts are actively campaigning, with posters and boards covering the ward. Even minor swings by independent voters could prove decisive in this high-stakes battle.
