Kerala weather update: Showers in south till Feb 22; north to stay scorching | Full forecast inside

Kottayam: Isolated showers triggered by a low-pressure system over the Indian Ocean are expected to bring slight relief to the southern districts of Kerala. However, the northern parts of the state (Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode) are likely to continue experiencing intense heat, as the chances of rainfall there remain low.

According to forecasts issued by the Meteorological Department, light rain is expected in districts from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam between 18 and 22 February. Rainfall is predicted to range between 2.5 mm and 15 mm, with the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms.

Dr MG Manoj, scientist at the CUSAT Radar Research Centre, warned that the rising ultraviolet index is a cause for concern. He noted that UV intensity is expected to be particularly high in hilly regions, posing additional health risks.

In response to the heat, adjusting working hours, especially during the afternoon, has been recommended. Daytime temperatures have already crossed 36°C in several areas. On Wednesday, the highest temperatures recorded were in Kottayam (36°C), Kannur (36.2°C) and Kochi (36°C).

Dry easterly winds blowing from neighbouring eastern states into Kerala are also contributing to the soaring temperatures.
