Kerala HC grants permission to burn 'Pappanji' at two locations this New Year

Kochi: The High Court has granted permission to burn the Pappanji (a traditional effigy) at Fort Kochi Parade Ground and Veli Ground, subject to conditions. The main instruction is that a security fence should be placed 72 feet around the Pappanji. Currently, a fence is set up at a distance of 40 feet, which the High Court has directed to be increased to 72 feet. This measure is aimed at preventing any debris from falling on individuals standing nearby when the Pappanji is burned.

Earlier, citing security concerns, the police had instructed the removal of the Pappanji set up by the Galadi Fort Kochi Club at the Veli Ground. Following this, the club approached the High Court for permission.

The burning of the Pappanji is a key event in Kochi's Christmas and New Year celebrations. This globally renowned ritual takes place in conjunction with the carnival at the Fort Kochi Parade Ground. The Pappanji prepared by the Galadi Club is located at Veli Ground, just two kilometres away from the Parade Ground.
