'Headache' for residents, injuries to players: Kerala govt to regulate functioning of turfs

The Kerala government has announced plans to regulate the operation of sports turfs across the state, addressing concerns about player safety and disturbances to nearby residents.
Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman informed the Kerala Assembly that the government would soon implement measures to ensure the quality and safety of privately built sports turfs. This follows a growing number of complaints regarding substandard turfs leading to injuries among players and causing nuisance for residents due to excessive noise and intense lighting.
Regulation and guidelines in the works
Responding to an unstarred question in the Assembly, Abdurahiman highlighted that while private initiatives are welcomed, the construction and management of turfs must adhere to proper standards. He noted that the Kerala State Sports Council has formed a committee, chaired by its president, to draft certification guidelines for these turfs.
Substandard turfs are causing injuries to players, and it needs to be regulated, said the minister. He added that the guidelines are nearing completion, and legislation to enforce these regulations is under consideration.
Addressing residents' complaints
The government is also responding to concerns from local residents about the disturbances caused by sports turfs. Excessive noise and intense light have been a recurring issue for those living near these facilities. The minister's written reply assured that these grievances are being addressed.
