HC ban on hoardings: Kerala government to introduce new regulation

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government is set to introduce an amendment apparently to counter the Kerala High Court’s ban on hoardings, banners, flex boards, and other publicity materials in public spaces. The move aims to permit campaign promotions using legally approved materials, Minister MB Rajesh informed state assembly on Tuesday.

A nominal fee will be levied for granting permission for such campaigns to ensure public convenience, the minister said while responding to MLA EK Vijayan’s attention motion.

HC on unauthorised boards
Last week, the High Court reiterated that unauthorised boards and arches were illegal, warning that strict action, including fines, would be imposed for violations. The court also summoned leaders concerned for conducting public meetings that encroached upon roads. It held local body secretaries accountable for removals, fine collection, and FIR registrations. The court directed the State Police Chief to enforce compliance and warned of action against negligent officers. It instructed election authorities to ensure political parties follow these rules. Similarly, the government must report implementation progress, including efforts to establish an online complaint platform. The government’s decision to amend the rules follows these developments.
