Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has approved the Rs 1033 crore layout plan for the development of Sabarimala, including key areas like 'Sannidhanam', Pampa, and the truck routes, as part of the Sabarimala Master Plan. This decision was made during the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The Sabarimala Master Plan outlines a comprehensive 50-year vision for the development of Sabarimala, aiming to make it a sustainable and pilgrim-friendly destination. The plan focuses on balancing environmental preservation with improved facilities for millions of devotees visiting the sacred hilltop.

The total expenditure for the development of ‘Sannidhanam’ is Rs 778.17 crore, with the project divided into three phases:

  • Phase 1: Rs 600.47 crore (First Phase)
  • Phase 2: Rs 100.02 crore (2028–33)
  • Phase 3: Rs 77.68 crore (2034–39)

The layout plan has been carefully crafted to respect the spiritual and cultural significance of the site. It divides the area into eight zones and includes two open plazas to manage crowds while preserving the view of the sacred ‘makaravilakku’ light.

Truck route and Pampa development

The truck route development is designed to provide a safe and comfortable journey for pilgrims travelling through forest areas. It will feature rest areas and an emergency vehicle route, with a buffer zone along both sides for environmental restoration.

For the Pampa area, the government has allocated Rs 207.48 crore, with Rs 184.75 crore for the first phase and Rs 22.73 crore for the second phase (2028–33). The total expenditure for the development of both the Pampa area and truck routes is Rs 255.45 crore, including Rs 47.97 crore for the truck route development.

In addition to the Sabarimala development plan, the Kerala Cabinet also approved the formation of a Local Self-Government Reform Commission, which will be headed by B Ashok IAS. The commission will review existing laws and guidelines in the Local Self-Government Department and work towards reforms aimed at ease of doing business, promoting development, and ensuring environmental protection.

Financial assistance for victims' families

The Cabinet also announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the families of four girl students who tragically lost their lives when a goods lorry overturned on top of them in Palakkad. Additionally, the families of victims in another accident involving a lorry on the Thrissur-Nattika National Highway will also receive Rs 2 lakh each.
