Kerala floods: Forest officials risk lives to rescue deer trapped in waterfall

Kollam: As Kerala continues to battle heavy rains and flooding, a daring rescue by forest officials has drawn widespread praise after they risked their lives to save a deer trapped in the raging waters of the Kumbhavurutty Waterfalls at Achankovil in Kollam district.

The dramatic rescue unfolded on Monday when two personnel from the Kerala Forest Department entered the fast-flowing stream amid the rocky terrain to reach the frightened animal stranded in the floodwaters.

A video shared by the Kerala Forest Department on its official Facebook page shows the officials carefully approaching the deer before catching hold of it, even as strong currents and the terrified animal made the rescue extremely challenging.

The deer struggled to break free while the rescuers battled the force of the water. After a tense effort, the officials managed to secure the animal and pass it to another member of the rescue team waiting on nearby rocks.

Before the official could examine the deer for injuries, it slipped from his hands, briefly stumbled on the slippery rocks, regained its footing and ran back into the surrounding forest.

Rescue wins praise, sparks debate

The rescue video quickly went viral on social media, earning widespread appreciation for the forest officials' courage. At the same time, it also triggered a debate over the risks taken during the operation.

Facebook user Roshan Areekode wrote, "Rescuing the deer is, at first glance, certainly commendable. At the same time, two people risked their lives to carry out the rescue. We need to decide whether greater value should be placed on the life of the animal or the lives of the humans."

Another user, Sasi Kumar R, praised the officials' commitment to wildlife conservation.

The rescue comes as heavy rains continue to affect several parts of Kerala, with swollen rivers, landslides and flash floods disrupting normal life across the state.
