Kochi: In an effort to ensure a free and fair election, UDF backed independent candidate TK Govindan approached the High Court seeking police protection for the Thaliparamba constituency in Kannur.

In his petition, Govindan claimed that he and his supporters faced threats from LDF workers, raising concerns about maintaining law and order during the upcoming polls.

Court seeks clarification from authorities

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas sought a detailed explanation from the Election Commission and the state government regarding the measures taken to protect candidates and maintain peace in the constituency. The authorities informed the court that police protection had been arranged for Govindan and steps had been taken to ensure law and order in the area.

The court directed the government and the Election Commission to provide a detailed report and adjourned the petition for hearing on Tuesday.

Court questions practicality

The judge remarked on the practical implications of granting such petitions, asking what can be done if all candidates approached the court seeking similar protection.

Additional petitions filed

Meanwhile, concerns about potential disruption have also been raised in other constituencies. A petition highlighting possible law and order issues in Nadapuram, submitted by UDF polling agent KM Raghunath, is also scheduled to be heard by the High Court on Tuesday.
