‘Modi Govt not fascist’: CPM stance triggers uproar; CPI seeks revision, Cong mocks, BJP applauds

Thiruvananthapuram: A political row has erupted over the CPM central leadership’s document, which suggests that the Modi government cannot be outrightly termed as fascist. The issue has triggered heated debates, with the Congress criticising the party, the BJP welcoming the stance, and the CPI demanding a revision.
Amidst the controversy, the CPM clarified that there is no change in its stance and that the document merely provides an explanation for a specific phrase in the draft political resolution.
No change in CPM’s position
Clarifying the party’s stance, senior CPM leader Thomas Isaac said, "The note in the document is merely an explanation of a particular phrase in the political resolution. The party’s position remains unchanged. The Modi government exhibits fascist tendencies but has not yet turned into a fully-fledged fascist regime."
Will CPM term BJP 'progressive', asks Congress
Reacting to the issue, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala remarked,
"Will the CPM now declare BJP a progressive party? The party and the LDF have been secretly and openly collaborating with the BJP. Wasn’t their victory in the last assembly elections secured with BJP votes? The CPM is deceiving the people."
CPI wants CPM to rectify
The CPI has taken a firm stand that it is unwilling to declare the Modi government as anything but fascist. CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam has called for a correction, stating that the CPM would eventually have to amend its position. CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam said, "The fascist ideology teaches how religion and faith can be used for political gains, and the Modi government is implementing these lessons in practice. If the CPM hesitates to call them fascist today, they will have to correct themselves tomorrow."
BJP’s take
On the other hand, BJP leader M T Ramesh welcomed the CPM’s realisation, stating, "Better late than never."
