A social media post from an Andhra Pradesh user is going viral after he praised Kerala’s innovative step of allowing couples to register their marriage instantly through video KYC verification, a process showcased in a now-trending video of Lavanya and Vishnu from Kawassery, Kerala.

The couple made headlines for completing their marriage registration online through a video-based identity verification process at their local panchayat. Moments later, they received a digitally verified marriage certificate, complete with their photograph, all on the same day.

Sharing the viral video, an Andhra-based user wrote on X, “In Kawassery, Kerala, Lavanya and Vishnu got married and registered their marriage instantly through Video KYC. The Panchayat member even handed over a digitally verified certificate with their photo on the same day. Respected Panchayati Raj Minister Pawan Kalyan sir and Commissioner Krishna Teja IAS Why don’t we implement a similar digital marriage registration system in our state? It will make the process faster, transparent, and more citizen-friendly.”

Viral praise for Kerala’s digital leap

The video of the newlyweds completing the KYC process with smiles has received thousands of views and shares. Many netizens have applauded Kerala’s model of e-governance, calling it a “citizen-first innovation” that other states should emulate. Comments under the viral post included lines like “Kerala sets an example again!” and “This is how technology should be used!”

Kerala’s K-SMART success

The instant marriage registration was made possible through K-SMART, an in-house digital governance platform developed by the Information Kerala Mission (IKM). The system allows couples to verify their identities through Aadhaar-based OTP or email authentication, eliminating the need to appear in person at local bodies.

Once verified, couples can instantly download their digital marriage certificate, with the entire process completed online under the supervision of panchayat officials.

Between January 2024 and September 2025, Kerala registered 1,44,416 marriages, of which 62,524 were completed online using video KYC verification. Thrissur tops the list with the highest number of digital registrations, followed by Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram, according to a PTI report.
