Poinachi (Kasaragod, Kerala): A 4.5-sovereign golden necklace carrying the thaali (the sacred thread tied by a groom around a bride) vanished from the life of M. Geetha, leaving her and her family anxious. Nine days later, the necklace returned mysteriously, accompanied by a letter from an unknown person expressing regret for the pain caused.

Geetha, wife of retired Deputy Tehsildar V Damodaran, noticed it missing while walking home after a bus journey on August 4. The sudden loss prompted immediate action — she informed the bus staff and lodged a complaint with Melparamba Police. Word of the missing necklace spread swiftly on WhatsApp groups, but for days, no trace appeared.

On the morning of August 12, just as Damodaran was about to leave home, he found an unexpected sight. Resting on the doorstep was the golden necklace, perfectly intact, accompanied by a letter.

"This necklace has been in my possession for nine days. At first I was happy. But whenever I took it in my hand I had negative feelings. I thought long about what to do. I saw the WhatsApp message. I realised it was wrong. Then I decided. I did not want anyone’s belongings. I found your address. I don’t want to reveal who I am. I apologise for holding it all these days and for causing pain."

The letter ended with the word “Kundamkuzhi,” a subtle clue to the sender’s identity. Whether it had been taken deliberately or by accident remained a mystery, but the act of return spoke louder than any explanation.

Damodaran reflected on the ordeal: “We have lost the necklace anyway. Whoever receives it, may their troubles ease and may they live well. I believe this is God’s reward for our prayers and that it inspired the respected friend to act in this way.” Grateful to all who shared the news on social media, the family now treasures not just the golden thaali but the story that accompanied its return.
