New Delhi: The Congress High Command has summoned several senior leaders from Kerala to Delhi as deliberations over the selection of the state's next Chief Minister continue. Former KPCC presidents V M Sudheeran, Mullappally Ramachandran, M M Hassan, K Sudhakaran, and K Muraleedharan have been called for high-level discussions.

Sources indicate that the decision to broaden the consultative process was made following a suggestion by veteran leader A K Antony. It is also understood that Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi has held talks with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi regarding the leadership transition.

While reports over the past few days suggested that K C Venugopal was the frontrunner—a move publicly supported by K Sudhakaran—the High Command is treading carefully. Since Venugopal did not contest the recent Assembly elections, the leadership must convince both state leaders and coalition partners of his candidacy. Simultaneously, they are weighing the claims of V D Satheesan, who led the party’s campaign, and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala. Positive PR reports and strong support from the party rank-and-file for V D Satheesan are also reportedly influencing the dialogue.

The High Command is also considering directly seeking the views of MPs, bypassing the observers appointed by the AICC, to reach a consensus. Further consultations with UDF ally leaders may also take place.

An official announcement is expected within the next two days, following a final meeting between Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. While most leaders are departing for Delhi immediately, Mullappally Ramachandran’s physical presence remains uncertain due to health reasons; however, he is expected to share his views via telephone.

Meanwhile, the three primary contenders—V D Satheesan, K C Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala—have stated they will abide by any decision made by the High Command.
