New Delhi: BJP leader C Sadanandan, who hails from Mattannur in Kerala’s Kannur district, on Monday took oath as a Member of the Rajya Sabha. Notably, he took the oath in Malayalam and in the name of God, making his swearing-in stand out on the opening day of Parliament's Monsoon Session.

C Sadanandan, better known as Sadanandan Master, is also the state vice-president of the BJP in Kerala. He lost both his legs in a violent clash between the RSS and CPM on January 25, 1994. He has contested twice for the Kerala Assembly from Kuthuparamba in 2016 and 2021 as a BJP candidate, although unsuccessfully. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had campaigned for him in 2016.

Sadanandan was among four newly nominated members who were administered the oath on Monday. Along with him, lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and historian-academic Meenakshi Jain were also sworn in as Rajya Sabha members. All four were nominated by President Droupadi Murmu. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar presided over the oath-taking ceremony.

The House also witnessed the swearing-in of elected members Birendra Prasad Baishya (AJP) and Kanad Purkayastha (BJP), and paid homage to victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and the Ahmedabad Air India plane crash. Tributes were also offered to several former members who passed away recently.
