Kerala Assembly polls: IUML plans to prioritise young leaders

Thiruvananthapuram: Following the Congress announcement, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)—a key constituent of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF)—has said it will place increased emphasis on young leaders in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.
IUML state president Panakkad Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal told reporters that the party plans to open up more electoral opportunities for the younger generation.
“Youngsters are our future. Across the globe, and even in India, young people are being given priority, and the Muslim League is adopting that approach,” Thangal said.
He pointed out that the IUML has consistently promoted young candidates in previous elections, many of whom went on to win.
“Last time, candidates who had contested three terms were replaced with younger contestants. They were able to bring positive changes by adopting development policies in tune with the present times,” he said.
Reaffirming the party’s stance, Thangal added, “This will continue in the Assembly election as well. We have seen the benefits of giving chances to youngsters.”
Earlier, Kerala Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan had announced that the Congress would reserve 50 per cent of its seats for women and young candidates.
The IUML is the second-largest party in the UDF in terms of representation, after the Congress. Elections to the 140-member Kerala Assembly are expected to be held between March and April this year.
