Police term alleged abduction attempt of Class 10 girl in Kannur as cooked-up story

Kannur: After hours of debate, concerns, and probe, police maintained that the alleged abduction attempt of a Class 10 girl in Kannur’s Kunhippalli was a cooked-up story.
According to the complaint lodged by the girl, mask-clad men who arrived in a black van grabbed her hands while she was on her way to school. She claimed that the incident happened around 9 am when she was walking in a lane near the school. But the alleged abduction attempt failed as she managed to loosen the grip and run away, she added. Police started a probe over the alleged incident. They also sounded a district-wide warning about this attempt.
As the reports on the incident emerged, locals including women took to the streets to voice their anguish. Mayor TO Mohanan said that the people are prepared to take up arms if violence against girls continues. The fate of the five-year-old Bihar girl in Aluva should not be repeated, he said.
However, after the preliminary probe, the police maintained that the alleged abduction attempt was a cooked-up story. The exterior CCTV visuals from nearby shops where the incident was said to have happened were scrutinized by the police.
It soon became clear that no black van had passed by the road between 8:30 AM and 11 AM. The girl’s parents were also questioned in detail. There were also contradictions in the girl’s statements which she changed three times. The statement of the class teacher of the girl was also recorded in which the teacher testified that the girl sometimes makes contradictory statements.
ACP T.K Ratnakumar said that based on the evidence available, it can be confirmed that no abduction attempt happened and the allegation is a cooked-up tale.
