Jacob Thomas demoted from DGP to ADGP

Thiruvananthapuram: DGP Jacob Thomas has been demoted as ADGP after it was found that he penned a book violating service rules. The government took the action when Jacob Thomas was to retire on May 31 this year.

After Pinarayi Vijayan-led government came to power, Jacob Thomas was appointed as vigilance director and it led to difference in opinions. The decision to demote Jacob Thomas came when the argument between the government and Jacob Thomas reached its final stage.

As per explanations, the decision to demote him was on the basis of departmental investigation report. Writing book without permission is a rule violation, it is said in the notice. The fight between Jacob Thomas and government started after the Ockhi disaster. Following this, he published a book titled ‘Sravukalkoppam Neenthumbol’ which led to the disciplinary action.

A senior IPS officer is demoted for the first time. At present, Jacob Thomas is the senior most IPS officer in service. He belongs to the 1985 batch of civil service officials. He was appointed in metal and steel industry recently and Jacob Thomas criticised the government against the decision. This also led to further action.
