IUML has rightful claim to Kerala deputy CM post, but not seeking it now: Munavvar Ali Thangal

Malappuram: Senior leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key constituent of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), on Friday outlined the party’s position on the deputy chief minister’s post, a day after the Kerala Assembly elections.

Muslim Youth League (youth wing of IUML) state president Panakkad Munavvar Ali Shihab Thangal said the party has a historical claim to the post. He noted that C.H. Mohammed Koya Sahib and Avukader Kutty Naha Sahib had previously held the position, underscoring the League’s eligibility.

No immediate demand, leadership clarifies

Thangal, however, made it clear that the IUML is not raising this as a demand at present and is not engaged in any discussions on the issue. While the party’s eligibility is evident, he indicated that it is not seeking the post now, adding that the matter could be considered if discussions arise in the future.

"IUML can rightfully claim the Deputy CM post, but we are not doing so now,"he said.

The remarks come in line with an earlier position articulated by senior IUML leader P.K. Kunhalikutty, who had stated that the party would not demand the deputy chief minister’s post if the UDF forms the government. He had also said the League would not place the front in a difficult position.

IUML state president Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal also expressed confidence in the alliance’s performance, stating, “UDF will come to power with a record majority and will sweep Malappuram district.”
