It’s VD Satheesan! Public mood wins as AICC names the ‘Battle Leader’ Kerala CM

Thiruvananthapuram: Ending 10 days of intense speculation following the election results, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has officially announced V D Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala. In a move that signals a definitive shift in the party’s traditional power dynamics, the high command bypassed veteran leaders Ramesh Chennithala and K C Venugopal to choose the man credited with leading the United Democratic Front (UDF) to its historic victory.
The People’s Choice
The decision followed extensive deliberations in New Delhi. While K C Venugopal reportedly held huge support among newly elected MLAs, the AICC concluded that the overwhelming public mood and the preferences of coalition partners could not be ignored. The leadership underlined that Satheesan's role as the "commander who led the battle" made him the natural choice to lead the government.
Architect of the UDF revival
Satheesan’s elevation is seen as a direct reward for his performance over the last five years. Inheriting a demoralised opposition with only 41 seats in 2021, he transformed the UDF into a formidable political force. He was instrumental in
- Aggressive Opposition: Systematically taking on the Pinarayi Vijayan Government on issues of corruption and governance.
- Strategic campaigning: Overhauling candidate selection and communication strategies, which resulted in the UDF winning over 100 seats.
- "Team UDF" philosophy: Moving away from internal group rivalries (the 'A' and 'I' groups) to create a unified front.
During the campaign, Satheesan famously staked his career on the outcome, stating he would retire from active politics if the UDF failed to return to power. His bold challenge to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for a public debate further cemented his image as a decisive leader.
A milestone appointment
V D Satheesan makes history as a Chief Minister who has never previously served as a Cabinet minister. His journey from a student leader at Thevara SH College to the highest office in the state is marked by his consistent performance as the MLA for Paravur since 2001. His developmental work in his constituency, particularly the 'Punarjani' housing project after the 2018 floods and the 'Sadgamaya' education initiative, earned him national praise, including from former President A P J Abdul Kalam.
As the first Congress Chief Minister since Oommen Chandy, Satheesan now faces the task of transitioning from a fierce critic of the government to the administrator of the state.
