In a first, CPM hoists Indian tricolour at party offices

Thiruvananthapuram: In a first, CPM commemorated Independence day at party offices by hoisting the Indian tricolour flag.

CPM state acting secretary A. Vijayaraghavan hoisted the Indian flag at Thiruvananthapuram AKG Centre, the party headquarters in Kerala. Party leaders M Vijayakumar, P.K. Sreemathy, M.C Josephine were also present at the place.

Vijayaraghavan said that the commemoration is not limited to flag hoisting. It will be a one-year-long event. The flag was hoisted in District Committee Offices in other places too. 75th Independence Day became a day of historic scenes in Kerala as CPM is hoisting Indian tricolour at party offices.

Vijayaraghavan claimed that on August 15, 1947, then state secretary P Krishna Pillai hoisted the national flag at the party office. Left (party) made many sacrifices and contributed significantly to the freedom fight, he said.

Till now, CPM was maintaining a view that the country has not yet achieved complete freedom. As a result, party never commemorated Independence Day officially. Notably, even at the national level, the party started to observe Independence Day to match with the nationalistic consolidation pursued by RSS, one of their major  arch-rival. They now have initiated national campaigns to propagate the contributions made by the party in India’s freedom fight and in developing modern India.  Meanwhile, they also plan to counter RSS vision of India which is against democratic and secular fabric of the country.
