Kerala Rains: IMD issues orange alert in three districts on Sunday

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded an orange alert in three districts on Sunday (July 28) due to the possibility of heavy rain. The orange alert is issued in Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. 

The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall in isolated areas of the state, with expected precipitation ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm over the next 24 hours. A yellow alert was issued for four districts—Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod—on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad districts on July 28. On July 29, the alert was sounded in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. The alert will continue on July 30 for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. Rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is expected over the next 24 hours.

Kannur and Kasaragod coasts are likely to experience high waves and rougher seas. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Centre, there is a possibility of "kallakkadal phenomenon"—the s sudden swell of the seas causing rough waves—and high waves of 2.3 to 3.1 metres on the Kerala coast until 11.30 p.m. on July 28.
