IMD issues heat wave alert for Kerala as mercury crosses 38°C

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is reeling under intense heat as temperatures surge across the state, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a three-day warning for hot and humid conditions.
According to IMD officials, the mercury has risen significantly above seasonal norms in most districts, worsening discomfort for residents and travellers alike.
Speaking to PTI, Neetha K Gopal, Director of IMD, Kerala, said the situation is already alarming. "The majority of the districts in Kerala will experience higher than normal temperatures on Monday, Tuesday, and the day after," she stated.
On Sunday, Punalur recorded a maximum temperature of 38.4 degrees Celsius, while Kottayam touched 37.8 degrees Celsius—around three degrees above normal levels for this time of year.
The extreme weather is taking a toll on those who work outdoors.
Looking ahead, the IMD has forecast a brief spell of relief, with light to moderate rainfall expected on March 27 and 28. However, officials cautioned that the respite will be temporary.
"After those two days, rains will reduce and temperatures will increase again. We are not anticipating much rain this week, and northern Kerala in particular will continue to see higher temperatures," Gopal said.
The authorities have urged people to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun as the heatwave conditions persist.
