Malappuram: Dramatic scenes unfolded Kalikavu here on Thursday when both a shooting team member and a wild boar he was chasing fell into a well. The incident took place when the local government-led shooting team was on a mission to shoot the boars that had encroached into human habitation areas.

However, Ayyappan, one of the shootiers fell into a well when a wild boar rammed into him. Things turned serious with the boar also jumping into the same well.

Ayyappan’s role in the group is to drive out the animals who may be camouflaged in the forest. When Ayyappan spotted the huge boar, he turned around to inform his fellow shooters of the same. This is when the boar charged towards him and both fell into the well.

Since Ayyappan was submerged underwater at the moment when the boar jumped into the well, the animal did not fall on him, which could have proved to be perilous otherwise. The boar tried to attack Ayyappan several times while inside the small well. Even though those scrutinizing were terrified, Ayyappan did not lose his confidence and held on to dear life. The members were too scared to shoot at the boar as they couldn’t risk hitting Ayyappan instead.

Knowing that Ayyappan could not hold on for longer, the shooter of the group, Dileep, decided upon a risky action. He asked Ayyappan to submerge himself underwater at the moment when he would fire the shot. The boar was hit by an unerring shot.

Ayyappan only suffered a minor leg injury. Both the fallen man and the boar were brought ashore by the group. The shooting team has shot 11 boars in total. The boar that fell into the well weighed more than 100 kilograms and was the biggest among those shot.
