Heavy rain washes away road in Wayanad; 19 tribal families relocated, 38 in relief camps

Thiruvananthapuram/Kozhikode: Persistent rainfall continues to batter various regions of Kerala, with Wayanad and Kozhikode witnessing heavy downpours. Continuous heavy rain in Wayanad has led to the collapse of a road at Venniyode, disrupting connectivity. 19 tribal families have been relocated for safety. A total of 38 families in the district have been shifted to seven relief camps set up to manage the situation.
River levels have surged, and flooding has been reported in low-lying areas, prompting emergency response measures.
Transportation has been affected on National Highway 766, particularly on the Kozhikode-Kollegal route, as strong winds uprooted trees, blocking roads and disrupting traffic.
Authorities have opened three relief camps in Kozhikode. Of these, two are located in Kozhikode city and one in Vadakara. At present, 88 people are housed in these camps. Officials reported partial damage to 60 houses due to the harsh weather. Road access remains hampered due to uprooted trees and water-logging in various areas.
The shutters of the Peruvannamuzhi Dam have been opened, increasing the water flow into the Kuttiady River. The Poonoor River's level has also risen, heightening flood concerns in areas along its banks.
With red alerts in force for Tuesday, all educational institutions in Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode districts have been declared closed. This includes anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres, and other similar establishments. Authorities in Kottayam have also announced closures for educational institutions as a precautionary measure.
Water levels continue to rise. At 7 am, authorities were set to lift the three shutters of the Malankara Dam by 1.5 metres each. People residing near the Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha rivers have been urged to stay vigilant, as more water is expected to be released.
