Heavy rain in Idukki: Vehicles washed away, homes flooded; landslide suspected

Thodupuzha, Kerala: Heavy rains lashed Idukki district on Saturday, causing widespread waterlogging in several areas. 

The vehicles parked at a bridge in Nedumkandam were reportedly swept away, including scooters and cars, as heavy rain lashed the region overnight. Some residences in the area have been flooded, and residents fear a possible landslide, though this has not yet been confirmed.

Amid rising water levels at the Kallarkutty Dam, authorities have opened four shutters, releasing 160 cubic metres per second (cusecs) of water. The dam’s water level has reached 824.5 metres.

The Mullaperiyar catchment area is also experiencing heavy rainfall. As of 6 am on Saturday, the Mullaperiyar dam’s water level reached 137.80 metres. By 8 a.m., all 13 shutters of the dam will be opened to release up to 5,000 cusecs of excess water.

Five people trapped in homes due to waterlogging were rescued in Kumily. 42 families have been evacuated to safer locations.
