Heavy downpours batter Kerala, prompting reservoir releases and high alerts
Thiruvananthapuram: Intense rainfall paired with powerful winds swept across numerous regions of Kerala on Saturday, causing water levels in major rivers and reservoirs to surge. The relentless weather has resulted in the inundation of low-lying areas and widespread property damage, forcing state authorities to issue urgent safety warnings and activate emergency protocols.
In the Palakkad district, the structural integrity of two residential compound walls gave way under the pressure of the deluge. Meanwhile, northern Kozhikode—especially its hilly terrains—experienced exceptionally severe downpours.
The rising water levels in the catchment zones prompted Idukki district officials to open the spillway gates of the Pambla Dam as a preventative measure. Following the release, residents living along both banks of the Periyar River were advised to remain vigilant, while officials were directed to take all necessary safety measures.
According to the State Disaster Management Authority, moderate to heavy rainfall alongside wind gusts peaking at 40 kmph is anticipated to persist across Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.
Weather experts warned that the ongoing conditions could trigger severe urban waterlogging, reduced traffic visibility and localised flooding along riverbanks. In addition, there is a heightened threat of uprooted trees damaging power grids, partial destruction of weak housing structures and a severe risk of landslides. Coastal areas are also on alert for rough seas that could impact local communities and livestock.
In response to the escalating situation, the Thrissur district administration suspended classes for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Saturday.
Disaster management teams have strongly urged citizens in high-risk zones to cooperate with evacuation orders. "Those residing along riverbanks and downstream of dams were also advised to remain alert and move to relief camps if instructed by the authorities." Furthermore, the public has been advised to minimise non-essential travel and strictly adhere to all local safety updates.
