Food poisoning: Youth in critical condition after eating shawarma; Kakkanad restaurant shut down

Kakkanad: A youth suffered food poisoning after eating shawarma ordered via online in Kakkanad, Ernakulam the other day. The victim has been identified as Rahul D Nair (23), a native of Kottayam. He is currently under treatment in the ventilator of Sunrise Hospital, Kakkanad.  

According to relatives, Rahul ordered the food from ‘Le Hayath’ restaurant last Wednesday around 9.30 pm. He suffered physical discomfort, stomach pain and vomiting the next morning and sought treatment at a hospital in Thrikkakara. On Sunday, he collapsed in his office and was rushed to Hospital. 

“The youth’s health condition continues to remain critical. Further information can be shared only after analysing his blood test results,” hospital authorities said. At present, the youth is undergoing dialysis due to kidney failure. 

Meanwhile, the health department of Thrikkakara Municipality shut down the restaurant following a complaint by the youth’s family. The food department also carried out an inspection and collected food samples. Police probe is also underway.
