Fever season returns: Over 10,000 seek treatment daily in Kerala; Leptospirosis a concern

Thiruvananthapuram: For the past week, over 10,000 people daily have been seeking medical treatment for fever-related illnesses across the state. Intermittent rainfall and changing weather conditions are believed to be the main reasons behind the spread. The majority of the cases are viral fevers, but dengue and leptospirosis are also being reported from most districts.
Last month, the surge in COVID-19 cases had caused public concern, though the number has now come down, with only 45 people currently under treatment. In the past week alone, over 300 people have sought treatment for dengue fever. So far this year, 37 people have died due to dengue. In July alone, 4,883 people received treatment for the illness.
Regarding leptospirosis, 88 deaths have been confirmed in the state this year, with 23 of those occurring in July. The cause of death for 69 other individuals who were treated for leptospirosis is yet to be confirmed. Experts believe that the high fatality rate is due to delayed diagnosis and late initiation of treatment. 516 people have sought treatment for leptospirosis in July alone.
An analysis of dengue and leptospirosis cases reported from January to July 2023 had helped authorities identify hotspots in every district. Though preventive measures were planned in these areas with the support of local self-government bodies and other departments, in many places, they were not effectively implemented.
