Elephant calf rescued from well in Malayattoor

Kochi: After hours of hard work, the police and fire force units rescued the elephant calf that fell into an abandoned well in Illithodu, Malayattoor, on Friday.
A ramp was dug by the side of the well using an earthmover to bring the calf out. According to latest report, the calf had joined its herd nearby.
The incident happened in the wee hours of Friday. The calf fell into a 12-ft deep well situated at a plantation here. Initially, the locals couldn't approach the well due to the presence of other elephants.
The locals claimed that the elephant herd had been destroying crops on a regular basis for the past few days.
The police and fire force unit arrived at the spot and commenced rescue operations. Meanwhile, the locals staged a protest against the threat posed by elephants in the area.
