Kerala MVD simplifies vehicle ownership transfer procedures upon owner’s death

Ottapalam: The Motor Vehicles Department has streamlined the procedures for transferring vehicle ownership after the death of the owner. This decision was made following observations that the procedures varied across different regional offices of the department.

From now on, ownership can be transferred to the next of kin using either the legal heirship certificate issued by the Tehsildar or a succession certificate obtained from the court. These documents will serve as the primary basis for the transfer process.

In cases where one of the heirs resides abroad, ownership transfer was previously challenging. However, the new directive allows such transfers to be facilitated. Heirs residing overseas can participate in the process via video calls, with their statements recorded and supported by affidavits.

Applicants will need to provide photographs and other necessary documents to the registering authority where the vehicle is registered. All legal heirs must either appear in person or provide their consent, after which the transfer process will be completed.

The department's move aims to address issues caused by delays and inconsistencies in the transfer process, which often led to vehicles being used without proper ownership updates. This could result in complications during future transactions involving the vehicle.

Given the rising number of vehicle accidents, ownership transfer applications are among the most frequently processed requests at Motor Vehicle Department offices. The streamlined procedures aim to ensure greater convenience and prevent future complications.
