Who was Padma Vibhushan Dr MS Valiathan?

Dr MS Valiathan, a distinguished figure in the medical field renowned for his pioneering work in cardiac surgery and Ayurvedic medicine, passed away Wednesday night in Manipal at the age of 90. He leaves behind a legacy of medical innovation and scholarly achievements that have deeply impacted healthcare in India and beyond.
Born in 1934 in Kerala, as the son of Marthanda Varma and Janakiamma, and educated at a government school in Mavelikara, Kerala University, Dr Valiathan began his journey in medicine at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. After completing his MBBS, he pursued higher education in surgery at the University of Liverpool and gained further expertise in cardiac surgery at renowned hospitals in the United States.
Dr MS Valiathan returned to India in 1972 on the special invitation of C Achuthamenon, who was Kerala’s Chief Minister at the time. His career started soaring as he became the founding director of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences in Thiruvananthapuram. Under his leadership, the institute flourished into a premier centre for medical research and treatment, especially excelling in cardiovascular care.
One of Dr Valiathan's most notable contributions was in the field of artificial heart valves. He successfully initiated the local manufacturing of these valves at Sree Chitra, significantly reducing costs and making this life-saving technology accessible to thousands across the country. His efforts revolutionised cardiac care in India, with over 1,00,000 patients benefiting from these indigenous valves. He emphasised the development of cost-effective and innovative medical technologies aimed at solving critical health problems for the general public. Under his leadership, blood bags were manufactured and widely distributed. Within two decades, he helped develop the Sri Chitra Institute into one of the best institutes in the country in the field of therapeutic research.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to healthcare, Dr Valiathan was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2005. Throughout his career, he advocated for the integration of Ayurveda with allopathic medicine, bridging traditional wisdom with modern scientific approaches.
Beyond his surgical accomplishments, Dr Valiathan was a prolific author and researcher, focusing extensively on Ayurvedic medicine. His studies, including translations of ancient texts into Malayalam and scholarly works on Ayurvedic principles, have helped preserve and advance India's traditional medical knowledge. His studies on Ayurvedic heritage, supported by a Senior Fellowship from the Homi Bhabha Council, represent some of the finest research efforts in this field. He has authored three distinguished works related to Ayurvedic science: 'Legacy of Charaka,' 'Legacy of Sushruta,' and 'Legacy of Vagbhata.' These works are aimed at making Ayurveda accessible to the general public. These texts explore the epistemological significance of Charaka, Susruta, and Vagbhata, blending Ayurvedic insights with modern medical perspectives.
Dr Valiathan's tenure as the first Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University further cemented his reputation as a visionary leader in education and healthcare administration. His initiatives at Manipal University expanded medical education and research, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students and medical professionals.
