Thiruvananthapuram: The Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the underground railway line connecting Vizhinjam port to the Balaramapuram railway station has been approved. The project management committee chaired by Dr V. Venu approved the DPR. Konkan rail corporation is responsible for the construction of this 10.76 km rail pathway that is estimated to cost Rs 1400 crore. As a part of this, the Balaramapuram railway station is also being renovated.

Balaramapuram railway station will be upgraded to a signal station and a container yard will also be constructed. The proposed outer ring road will connect with the railroad at Madavoorpara. Once the port is operational, the containers will be transported on the national highway.

The median will be cut where the port road meets the national highway to facilitate smooth traffic movement. The project management committee has given the proposal to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). It is indicated that NHAI will be accepting this proposal.

A cloverleaf intersection will be constructed at Vizhinjam when the national highway till Kanyakumari is ready. The road leading from the port to the national highway will be widened. The service road of the national highway will be made use of in the first phase for the movement of cargo.
