Thiruvananthapuram: Intermittent rainfall and waterlogging have led to a surge in dengue and leptospirosis cases across Kerala. After a period of decline, Covid-19 infections are also being reported once again in the state.

Dengue cases cross 300

According to the Health Department, over 300 people are currently seeking treatment for dengue each day. So far this year, 15 people have died due to the disease. The highest number of infections has been reported in the districts of Palakkad, Kollam, and Kozhikode.

Leptospirosis death toll reaches 33

Leptospirosis has also caused concern, with 33 deaths reported.

Covid-19 cases on the rise again

As per the Union Health Ministry, Kerala has recorded 95 active Covid-19 cases, an increase from 68 cases on 12 May. However, health experts have advised that there is no cause for alarm, as the state has achieved significant vaccination coverage.

No immediate threat, says health department

Dr KJ Reena, Director of the Health Department, stated that in the light of the rising number of patients, all districts have been instructed to collect and test samples from suspected cases. Authorities have also been asked to examine whether any genetic mutation is present in the virus.

The Health Department has not issued a public warning, as there is currently no major spike in hospital admissions or a situation requiring widespread emergency care.

Covid situation under control nationally

In total, 182 Covid-19 cases have been reported in Kerala during May. Across the country, the Union Health Ministry has confirmed that 257 people are currently infected. Officials maintain that the overall situation remains under control.

In other countries, like Singapore and Thailand, a new version of the Omicron virus called JN.1 is spreading.
