Chelakkara:  Ramya Haridas, the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate for the Chelakkara Assembly by-election, has emphasised the importance of traditional festivals like ‘Pooram’ and fireworks as integral parts of local culture. Speaking to ‘Mathrubhumi’, she expressed concern over the diminishing presence of these cultural elements, and stated that the same will be reflected in the bypolls.

Haridas made her remarks while campaigning, discussing the connection between festivals and the sentiments of the people in Chelakkara. She stated that people have shown significant support for the UDF and are likely to express this in their votes.

"Chelakkara residents cherish their festivals and fireworks. However, the celebrations, including the century-old festival at Anthimahakalan Kavu temple, have not taken place in the last two years. Many people believe in preserving traditions, and there are clear signs that these cultural practices are under threat," Haridas remarked.

She noted that the region, which falls within the Alathur parliamentary constituency, has seen harmonious competitions and celebrations that have been disrupted recently. Haridas expressed sadness over the efforts to eliminate these cherished practices, stating, "Whether it's the Thrissur Pooram or the fireworks at Anthimahakalan Kavu temple, it is a source of distress for us."

The by-election in Chelakkara has been called following K Radhakrishnan's election to the Parliament. The race is set to be competitive, with former MLA U R Pradeep contesting for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and K Balakrishnan vying for the BJP.
