Debt-ridden farmer ends life in Mananthavady

Mananthavady: A young farmer was found hanging inside his house on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Anil (32). He was a native of Edavaka grama panchayat. Relatives claimed that Anil committed suicide due to financial stress.
Anil had debts amounting to a total of Rs 4 lakh rupees in various financial institutions. Apart from this, he had borrowed a sum of Rs 1 lakh from various individuals as well. The deceased who was into banana farming last year suffered losses after 4,000 of his plants were destroyed. Neither did he reap expected profits from paddy cultivation in 2023.
Following the series of losses, Anil was gripped with fear. He had no clue how to repay his loans. The farmer’s body was laid to rest at the Kallody St. George Forane Church Cemetery on Thursday evening.
Anil is survived by his parents and two siblings.
