The Indian Embassy in Jordan has expressed its condolences following the tragic death of Gabriel Perera, a Kerala resident, who was reportedly shot by Jordanian soldiers on February 10. The embassy posted on its official X account:

“The Embassy has learnt of the sad demise of an Indian national in unfortunate circumstances. The Embassy is in touch with the family of the deceased and is working closely with Jordanian authorities for transportation of mortal remains of the deceased.”

Gabriel, a resident of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram, was allegedly killed while attempting to cross into Israel illegally with his brother-in-law, Edison Charles, and two other companions. The group had arrived in Jordan on a visiting visa, and reports suggest they attempted to cross the Jordan-Israel border when they were confronted by Jordanian soldiers. In the ensuing chaos, Gabriel was shot in the head and died instantly, while Edison was shot in the leg and received medical treatment.

Edison, who was repatriated to Kerala after receiving hospital care, recalled the incident. “I remember getting shot while trying to help Gabriel get up by holding his hand. It happened on the beach, and the next thing I recall is waking up in a camp in Jordan,” he said.

Gabriel’s family was informed of his death via an email from the Indian embassy.

The incident has sparked protests, and investigations have been launched by local police and intelligence agencies. It has been reported that an agent may have been involved in assisting the group with their illegal attempt to cross the border.
