CPM has no objection to participate in anti-UCC protests of Muslim League: MV Govindan

Thiruvananthapuram: CPM state secretary MV Govindan said that the party has decided to hold four seminars against the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). There is no impediment for CPM to participate in the protest platforms conducted by the Muslim League against UCC, he stated.
We need the backing of everyone except communal extremists. We have invited only those who have taken a stand in the matter. Congress is not invited because they have no fixed stance regarding the UCC, they adopt varied opinions in each state. Apart from four seminars, the CPM will also hold many activities to sensitize the people against the UCC.
CPM acknowledges the Muslim community's collective opposition to the Uniform Civil Code. Whether or not to attend the seminar is ultimately the decision of the League. A broad united front is being formed here. Thangal has taken a huge leap based on this and he does not require everyone to participate in this, Govindan said.
“Our decision is to support anyone who takes a stand against the Hindutva agenda”, Govindan added.
Meanwhile, the CPM state secretary maintained that he stands by the comment he made about churches in England. “I told you about what I saw when I went there. I didn't mean to hurt any sentiments.” Govindan clarified. The Pastor Council had come forward condemning the CPM leader's remarks.
The Thalassery Archdiocese Pastoral Council had issued a statement saying that Govindan’s statement was reprehensible. CPM is spreading misinformation among the general public by equating priesthood to trade unions.
A look at history will give evidence to the immense contributions made by christian churches to Europe’s overall development under the leadership of priests and saints. The CPM state secretary making statements like this by suggesting that he has mastered everything within a five-day visit will be dismissed outrightly by the community of believers. It is a shame that such misleading statements are made ignoring the great contributions of the christian community towards Kerala’s renaissance, Pastoral Council General Secretary Fr. Joseph Muttathukunnel and secretary George Thayyil opined.
