CPM to address 8 key questions following embarrassing defeat in Kerala local body elections

Thiruvananthapuram: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has launched a detailed booth-level review to understand the reasons behind its defeat in the recent local body elections. The party aims to analyse the results by seeking answers to eight key questions at the grassroots level, ranging from voter registration to actual voting patterns.
The review will examine every stage of the electoral process to identify any lapses at the local level. Party sources said that meticulous preparations were undertaken for campaigning, but the assessment will now focus on whether there were organisational failures in implementing these plans at the ward and booth levels.
Ahead of the elections, the party had instructed its units to verify the voter lists and identify individuals who were not registered. The current review aims to determine how many of these unregistered voters could be added to the lists, and how many ultimately exercised their right to vote. Workshops had been conducted for party members at both ward and booth levels to ensure responsibilities—from registering voters to getting them to the polling station—were executed effectively. The review will assess whether these measures were implemented properly.
In addition, the party is scrutinising organisational shortcomings across districts. Completed reports from each district will be submitted to the State Committee. In many areas, workshops could not be conducted, which may be considered a lapse by area committees.
Ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections, the party is expected to take urgent corrective measures. Officials who contested elections despite holding key party positions will also be reviewed. The state leadership had instructed that those contesting polls should resign from party posts; however, many candidates did not comply and subsequently lost. Leadership is reportedly not considering inducting defeated office-bearers into party positions anytime soon.
Key questions for booth-level assessment:
- Total number of voters to be added
- Number of voters successfully added
- Number of added voters who did not cast their votes in the LSG polls
- Participation in ward-level workshops
- Booths under each area committee
- Participation in booth-level workshops
- Expected number of votes
- Number of expected votes not received
The CPM leadership has emphasised that the review is aimed at strengthening organisational efficiency and improving performance in future elections.
