CPM Politburo meet: Who will get Kerala Assembly Election 2026 candidate ticket?

New Delhi: The CPM Politburo meeting began in New Delhi on Friday, with key decisions expected on candidate selection and the political future of several senior leaders, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, K K Shailaja and former Finance Minister Thomas Isaac.
The high-level meeting of the CPM comes amid growing speculation over generational transition, internal age norms and the party’s strategy for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.
Focus on senior leaders’ candidature
According to party sources, discussions are likely to centre on whether senior leaders and Central Committee members should be fielded in the Assembly polls and, if so, from which constituencies.
A final decision on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s candidature is expected only after the Politburo’s deliberations. The 80-year-old leader remains central to the party’s electoral strategy, but internal debates over continuity and renewal have intensified.
In Kannur district, speculation over the candidate list has already triggered signs of dissent. K K Shailaja, a sitting MLA and former Health Minister, is reportedly unhappy over indications that she may not be fielded again from Mattannur, a seat she currently represents. Sources suggest she has conveyed her preference not to contest if denied the constituency.
Thomas Isaac, a Central Committee member and two-time Finance Minister, is also said to be keen on contesting. Isaac was not fielded in the 2021 Assembly elections and later lost the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. His possible return is now under discussion.
Differences surface in Thaliparamba
Internal differences have also emerged in Thaliparamba, where local leaders are divided over potential nominees. Reports indicate that state secretary M V Govindan is backing journalist-turned-politician M V Nikesh Kumar, though other names are being considered at the district level.
Nikesh Kumar previously contested the 2016 Assembly elections from Kannur but was unsuccessful.

Crucial phase for CPM
The Politburo deliberations come at a sensitive time for the CPM, which is aiming to retain power in Kerala amid a politically charged atmosphere. The party’s performance in the recent local body elections in December reportedly triggered concern within the leadership.
Beyond individual candidatures, the decisions taken at the Politburo meeting are expected to reflect the party’s broader electoral strategy, balancing leadership continuity, organisational discipline and generational change ahead of the Assembly elections.
An official announcement on the candidate list is awaited following the conclusion of the discussions.
